The “ déluge ” of ’96 also shook local inhabitants’ illusionary sense of security that the region’s numerous and imposing hydraulic structures would last forever. “For a century, we defied the laws of nature,” wrote Taras Grescoe for Canadian Geographic, harking back to one hundred years of manipulation and disregard of the region’s natural hydraulic system.
