This problem was compounded by the dominance of the planters image as the social ideal. American Slave Narratives includes extensive firsthand accounts of slavery from over 10 former slaves. Daniel Webster successfully argued for Dartmouth in the US Supreme Court, and Chief Justice John Marshall (in office 1801-35) handed down the landmark decision, interpreting the Fourteenth Amendment, that Dartmouth was a private rather than public entity, therefore, the state of New Hampshire did not have regulatory power over it.

Lincoln signed the Amendment, even though presidents have no legal job to do in the passage of a Constitutional Amendment. In Mississippi, twenty-one "bleached and unbleached" men were hanged for plotting a slave revolt. The collection encompasses such a wide range of materials, a separate database was created to identify each manuscript. The census was taken county-by-county, and lists each plantation separately -- so the slave-holdings from multiple counties and multiple plantations must be added together to get a true idea of the holdings of the single plantation owner.
