Southerners rejected the denials of Republicans that they were abolitionists. The failure of Reconstruction meant that the struggle of African Americans for equality and freedom was deferred until the 20th century -- when it would become a national, and not a Southern issue. The Abolition Movement started in the 1680's with the Quakers. Department of Confederate Military Records. Infantry unit records (regiments 1st-64th), 1860-1993 (bulk: 1861-1865, 1884, 1899-1918). The plan had been to strike the rebel flank, but the Northerners had been incorrectly positioned and instead were taking fire in their own flank. As in the case of the Untouchable leaders black activists were fearful that reform from above would ultimately leave black communities in a state of dependence.
